It’s been yet another massive few months for Camp Kulin, as we continue to grow at an astronomical rate. We have not only provided our regular camps for general campers from across WA whose parents pay for them to attend camp and our scholarship campers who have been affected by some form of childhood trauma, but we’ve also run two special camps as well. We hosted children who lost their homes and were affected by the summer bushfires in Yarloop and Waroona, and we also ran our second camp in conjunction with the Telethon Type 1 Family Centre and Diabetes WA for teens with Type 1 Diabetes.
As well as this, we have launched our Reach programs in Corrigin and Kulin. In Corrigin, we are working in conjunction with Corrigin District High School to provide support services to teachers and students, who have been without a chaplain for the past four years. In both Corrigin and Kulin we will also be providing one on one and small group mentoring, after school programs such as boys group, girls group and circus, as well as mental health support and provision of links to outside services. These are extremely important programs for small regional communities, and we thank the local organisations who are supporting them financially. We are still looking for some sponsors for the Corrigin program, so if you are able to help, please contact us.
Camp Kulin continues to provide prac placements to train university students in many fields, such as Psychology, Children & Family Services, Preventative Health, Community Services and Youth Work. We currently take students from Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, Curtin University, RMIT (Melbourne), Notre Dame University, Challenger TAFE and we will soon be taking students from the University of Western Australia as well.
Demand for Camp Kulin has never been as high. The statistics for children in Australia at the moment are terrifying. There is 1 suicide every 3 hours, and suicide has now overtaken everything else to become the biggest cause of preventable death in children aged 5-17 years of age. 13.9% of children are affected by some form of mental disorder, including conduct disorder, major depressive illness and anxiety. A child is neglected or abused every 13 minutes, and 1 in every 3 children have been sexually abused. We are seeing an increase in children who are homeless, and those affected by domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse. As these statistics increase, so does the number of children who need to attend Camp Kulin. It has reached the point where demand far outdoes the capacity we have to take campers, and as such, our wait lists grow every day, with some high needs children and teens now facing a 1-3 year wait to attend.
Although it is six months away, we are now preparing for our 2017 Summer Season. Demand for this program is already extremely high, with an average of 10 requests a day currently coming in. Over the course of the summer, we expect to work with over 200 general and scholarship campers. Our goal is to get 120 children sponsored to attend scholarship places over the summer, including those attending our second Christmas camp for children who may not have Christmas otherwise. If you can assist with sponsoring a child for a day or a week during our summer season, please contact us and help change the lives of children who so desperately need it.
