7 Tips for Staying Cool Camping in Hot Weather
Camping in hot weather can feel like a tricky proposition. The heat takes all the joy out of your inspiring outdoor adventure. But with the right preparation and resources, it’s still possible to have a spectacular camping experience even if the thermometer is climbing. Here are seven tips for staying cool camping in hot weather.
1. Choose a Campsite Well-Ventilated and Close to Water
One of the best ways to stay cool when camping is to choose a site that offers a lot of natural ventilation. Try to find a spot with plenty of shade, such as underneath a tall tree. If possible, look for a site close to a river, lake, or pond so you have access to nearby water for cooling down.
2. Pace Yourself During the Heat of the Day
If you can, plan outdoor activities for early or late in the day to avoid being outdoors during the hottest part of the day. Take frequent breaks in the shade, and go for a swim or take a nap to help you avoid getting overheated.
3. Dress for the Occasion
Wearing the right clothing can help you stay comfortable and cool during hot weather camping trips. Opt for lightweight, light-colored fabrics such as cotton. Avoid tight-fitting clothing, as this may make you feel more overheated. Also, be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun.
4. Set Up a Wet Tent
If your campsite is well-ventilated, you can cool down the inside of your tent by setting it up wet. Hang a wet blanket, sheet, or tarp on the side of the tent that’s facing the prevailing wind. The wind will blow through the wet surface, cooling your tent.
5. Bring the Right Camping Gear
Aside from clothing and bedding, there are several pieces of camping gear that can help you stay cool. Bring along an ice chest to keep drinks and snacks cold. A spray bottle can come in handy for misting yourself with a cooling spray of water. A small battery-powered fan can help circulate air in your tent.
6. Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is key to avoiding heat-related illnesses. Drink plenty of water, and also consume electrolytes to replace minerals and salts lost through perspiration. You can also freeze a bottle or two of water for later use. To help cool yourself down, try submerging a t-shirt in a basin of cold water and wringing it out before wearing it.
7. Take a Dip
One of the best ways to beat the heat and stay cool camping is to take a dip. Look for a safe spot to swim in nearby rivers, lakes, or ponds. With my kids, I take a dip every couple of hours or so, and they always look forward to it.
