What to Wear to Sleep When Camping – Advice from a Long-Time Camper
Camping is a great way to explore the outdoors, make new memories with your family and friends, and enjoy some fresh air. But what should you wear to sleep when camping? It’s important to consider the weather, the type of camping trip you plan on taking, and the activities you’ll be doing. After camping with my family for over 20 years, I have shared my camping knowledge and advice on how to dress for a camping trip, from what to wear when sleeping to what to pack for day hikes.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Sleepwear
When it comes to sleeping in the outdoors, there are several key factors to consider when it comes to your sleepwear. Firstly, consider the weather: are you camping in hot, warm, cold, or even wet environments? It’s important to check the forecast and plan for the worst case scenario to ensure you stay comfortable all night long.
Don’t forget about wind. During the night, wind chill can easily make a hot summer night feel cooler than cold, so make sure you wear adequate layers. Consider humidity too. High humidity can make you feel much colder than the actual air temperature.
Finally, consider the type of camping you’ll be doing. Will you be car camping or tent camping? If you are tent camping in a more remote area, you’ll need to consider the temperature at a higher elevation. Every 2,000 feet, the temperature is usually 4°C (7°F) colder.
Packing the Right Gear & Fabrics
When it comes to packing your gear, you’ll want to make sure you bring along the right fabrics and clothing items. While natural fabrics such as wool and cotton are great for keeping you warm, they tend to take longer to dry should they end up getting wet. Synthetic fabrics, such as polyester and nylon, are lightweight and will keep you warm even when wet. They also tend to dry faster than natural fabrics.
Layering is a great way to keep warm. Be sure to bring several items of insulation such as fleece pullovers, long underwear, and thermals. You’ll also want to pack an outer layer such as a jacket and a waterproof shell.
When it comes to sleeping outside, having the right footwear is a must. You’ll want to bring along a pair of thick-soled shoes or boots that will keep your feet warm and comfortable. Be sure to bring an extra pair of socks just in case your feet get wet.
Once you have your layers, shoes, and outerwear picked out, it’s time to think about sleepwear. Look for items that are lightweight, breathable, and comfortable. Soft, stretchy fabrics are great for sleeping in, as they’ll stay warm even if they get wet. If you’re really cold, you can always put on another layer of clothing.
Women generally opt for loose-fitting shorts and tank tops, pajama pants and a long-sleeved shirt, or tights and a hoodie. Men often choose boxer shorts and a t-shirt, pajama pants and a long-sleeved shirt, or a onesie depending on the weather.
If the temperature drops dramatically during the night, you may need to bring along a thermal blanket or sleeping bag. A good sleeping bag is essential for sleeping comfortably in the outdoors. Many camping sleeping bags are designed for specific temperatures. Be sure to do your research and pick one that will match the weather at your campsite.
Ways to Stay Warmer
If you’re looking for ways to stay extra warm at night, there are a few options. Consider using a sleeping pad or air mattress for extra insulation. You can also use warm materials, such as a wool blanket or insulated sleeping bag liner, for additional warmth.
If you’re camping in cold weather, consider wearing a balaclava or ski mask. This will keep your face and head warm, which can help to keep your body temperature up. Wearing gloves and a hat are also smart choices.
Heading out during the colder months? Then don’t forget to pack a camping heater. This will help to keep you and your sleeping gear warm and toasty.
